Anti-Scam Guide

At Dubuz Classifieds, the vast majority of users are honest and trustworthy. However, as with any online marketplace, it’s wise to follow a few simple precautions to protect yourself from fraud. This guide outlines common-sense rules and warning signs to help you stay safe.

Our Safety Recommendations

  1. Deal locally whenever possible. The safest transaction is one where you can meet the other person face to face and inspect the item before payment.

  2. Never send money through anonymous payment systems. Avoid services like Western Union, MoneyGram, or any method that doesn’t allow you to trace or recover funds. Use secure, traceable payment options.

  3. Do not send money or goods overseas. Be especially cautious if someone asks you to ship an item abroad or transfer funds to a foreign account.

  4. Be wary of cheques. Cheques can be counterfeit, and you may discover the fraud only after your bank has already processed them.

  5. Verify the person you’re dealing with. Ask for a full name, physical address, and a phone number. Use a second source (such as a phone book or a quick online check) to confirm those details.

  6. Keep a paper trail. Save all emails, messages, listings, and notes about the transaction. These records can be invaluable if something goes wrong.

  7. Trust your instincts. If an offer looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Walk away from deals that seem suspicious.

Common Signs of a Scam

Fraudulent schemes often share one or more of these red flags:

  • The person claims to be located abroad or is currently travelling overseas.

  • They refuse or avoid meeting you in person.

  • Payment is requested through Western Union, MoneyGram, or an unverified cheque.

  • Messages are written in broken or strangely worded language, or look as if they’ve been copied and pasted from a script.

  • The price or terms are unrealistically generous — for example, a brand-new item being sold for far less than its market value.

If you notice any of these warning signs, stop communication immediately and report the user to us.
